The following tartans are affiliated with Clan MacTavish. The tartans are divided into two groups. The first group represents “MacTavish” tartans which also includes surnames that are variants of MacTavish, e.g., Cash, Thompson, Thomson, and Holmes. The second tartan group represents associated family names (formerly known as Septs), e.g., Todd, and Stephenson/Stevenson, and their variants (Stephens, Stevens, and Stinson). All tartan names are consistent with both the tartan names and reference numbers used by the Scottish Register of Tartans. It should be noted that some vendors offer “ancient” tartans, e.g., MacTavish Ancient Hunting, MacTavish Ancient Red, and Stephenson Ancient. These are actually not “ancient’ tartans, but are modern recreations of what is hypothesized to be how a given tartan might appear if the colors were made with dyes that simulate the plant an animal dyes used in preceding centuries.
Which tartan should a member of Clan MacTavish Wear? All Clan MacTavish members are free to wear the tartan of their choice. We offer the following guidelines:

- Wear your tartan correctly.
