There is a recent discover that will problably yield some insight into why Prince Charles Stewart fled after Culloden. It is known that France was in support of his effort to regain the Throne. So why did he flee?

He fled because his loyal highlanders were decimated after Culloden. What else could he do?

The gold and supplies from France may have been helpful, but I question many of his decisions. I don't think we can ever really know if things could have been different. Poor judgement, emotional actions, and inexperienced youthfulness have shaped so much of our world. What if Hannibal had been as much a diplomat and peacetime leader as an awe inspiring warrior?
