Since I am writing the history of the clan, I refer often to copies of papers I inherited from the late Chief Dugald. I found this transcription of 1793 Letters Patent in a bundle of such papers. I am assuming, because there is no note attached which verifies it as coming from Lyon Court, that this is a copy of a transcription made at the time of the issue of the patent, but without verification, I can only assume. It may have come from an archive, maybe at Lochgilphead. When Dugald was researching to prove his position at Lyon Court, he, with the help of then archivist for Argyll and Bute, Murdo MacDonald, dug up some rather interesting papers from the archive. This may certainly have been one of them. (Note that most often the letters "f" are actually "s".) It is certainly an interesting read due to the declaration therein of the MacTavish's being called both an ancient nation and numerous race. Lyon Court needs to verify this, if indeed they retain a copy of the 1793 Letters Patent.

Facsimile of Letters Patent to Lachlan MacTavish of Dunardry
Original in Latin

To all and fingular thofe who fhall fee or hear of thefe Letters Patent, We John Hooke Campbell, of Bangefton, Efq. Lion King of Arms, announce and declare, that it is proved from our Archives and fuch other evidences, and teftimony of men of honour worthy of credit in fafts of antiquity, and efpecially of the chiefs of Dunardry, an ancient and numerous race in the name of Lachlan MacTavish, Efq, Laird of Dunardry, MacTavish an ancient nation, and related and allied to the moft noble and illuftrious families of all Scotland. In faith and teftimony whereof, we have caufcd thefe Letters Patent to be fubfcnbed by our Deputy Robert Bofwell, Efq,, and the great feal of our office to be affixed thereto. Given at Edinburgh, the ninth day of the month of March, in the year of our Lord one thoufand feven hundred and nienty-three.
